The piece was probably begun around 1878, but the author reworked it extensively many years later. The nature of the piano part suggests Dvorák planned on creating an orchestral version. The piece was not published until 1929 in a revised version by Günther Raphael. The publication includes a detailed Preface and Editor's Notes and is part of the first Complete Edition of the Works of Antonín Dvorák.
